Thakkali Chutney/Tomato Chutney/தக்காளி சட்னி/Side dish for Idlis, Dosas etc/How to make Thakkali Chutney with step by step photos & Video

We make different types of chutneys as side dish for idlis, dosas etc in South Indian homes and the thirst and search of chutneys never end. This is one of the traditional and authentic South Indian chutneys made in many homes and restaurants. When served with idlis and dosas everybody prefers to eat more idlis just for the sake of this chutney. Ingredients
Tomatoes
4 [cut to cubes]
Onion
2 [cut to cubes]
Ginger
One inch piece [ finely chopped]
Garlic
6 cloves [Peeled]
Green chillies
2
Dry red chillies
4-5
Coriander seeds
1 ½ tbsp
Salt
As needed
Oil
1.5 tbsp

For Tempering
Oil/Gingelly oil
2 tsp
Mustard seeds
½ tsp
Cumin seeds
½ tsp
Urad dal
½ tsp
Curry leaves
8-10

Method
Heat oil in kadai, add dry red chillies and sauté for 20 sec. Add coriander seeds and saute for another 20 sec.           
             

Now add onions, green chillies, garlic, ginger and saute until they turn golden brown.

Add the tomatoes, salt and saute really well, add needed salt at this stage.

Mix really well, cover and cook for about 2 minutes.

Mash the tomatoes really well.

Add 2 tbsp of cilantro/coriander leaves and mix really well.

Cool it completely and transfer everything to the mixer. Add needed water to the mixer and grind it to fine paste.


Heat oil in a kadai, splutter the mustard seeds. Now add the cumin seeds, urad dal, curry leaves and saute it for 20 sec. Switch off the stove and add the tempering to the chutney.
                              

Yummy and delicious thakkali chutney is ready to be enjoyed.
Suggestions:
Tempering is not required, but gives a wonderful taste when the chutney is tempered.
 If the tomatoes are not sour enough you can add one small piece of tamarind when grinding the chutney.
