Pudalangai Kootu/Snake Gourd Kootu

Kootu is a simple and healthy dish. Kootu means vegetables added with lentils and is a side dish in a tamil feast. It can be mixed in rice and given to kids so they get the proteins from dhals and the vegetables at the same time. It is generally made either with Thoor dhal or Moong dhal or Bengal gram dhal. This pudalangai(snake gourd) kootu is made with moong dhal. Check out other delicious kootu varieties here.

Here’s how to make it with step by step photos…



Ingredients

Pudalangai (Snake gourd)
250 gm
Paccha paruppu(Moong dhal)
½ cup
Onion
1 chopped finely
Red chillies
3
Black Pepper Corns
6
Mustard Seeds
¼ tsp
Cumin Seeds
¼ tsp
Urad dhal
¼ tsp
Curry leaves
4
Oil
1 tsp
Asafoetida
2 pinches

For Grinding

Grated Coconut
3 tbsp
Green Chillies
3
Cumin Seeds
½ tsp


Wash, clean and cut the snake gourd and keep it aside. Roast the dhal to golden brown and keep it aside.


In a pressure cooker heat the oil, add mustard seeds after it splutters add the cumin seeds, urad dhal, red chillies, pepper corns and curry leaves.


Add the onions and sauté until golden brown, now add the pudalangai, asafoetida and sauté for a min. Add the moong dhal, salt and mix it well. Now add 1/2  cup of water and pressure cook it for one whistle.

Grind the coconut, chillies and cumin seeds to fine paste. Add it to the cooked dhal and cook for 3 mins.

Yummy pudalangai kootu is ready to be served.

Note: You don't need pressure cooker to cook this dish, add more water and cook directly on the stove in a kadai.
