Biryani Kathrikkai Recipe/Brinjal for Biryani Recipe

Biryani kathrikkai as the name says is a perfect accompaniment for biryani’s. It is usually served in all the marriages and restaurants. I have tried different versions of this same gravy but finally settled down with this one which has satisfied my family and friends taste buds.

Here’s how to make it with step by step photos…

1 tsp
Gingelly oil

Salt
As needed

For Grinding
Sesame seeds/Ellu
1 ½ tbsp
Roasted Peanuts
15
Methi seeds/Vendhayam
¼ tsp
Preparationt Time: 10-12 minutes                   Recipe Category: Side Dish/Lunch
Cooking Time: 30-35 minutes                            Recipe Cuisine: South Indian

Method

Dry roast the sesame seeds, methi seeds and grind it along with roasted peanuts in to a powder.

Wash and cut the brinjals to 4 cuts, do not cut them fully.

In a kadai heat oil, add mustard seeds after it splutters add cumin seeds, crushed black pepper, curry leaves.
Now add the onions and saute until golden brown.

Now add the brinjals, toss it in the oil  and cook it covered for about 5 -7 min. Open it and add the red chilli powder(add more if you want it spicy), coriander powder, turmeric powder, salt and give a good stir. Turn the stove to low flame and wait for the raw smell of the chilli powder to go away.

Now add the tamarind water and the ground paste and bring it to boil. The gravy will start thickening wait for the oil to ooze out, which takes about 5-8 min.

Finally garnish with curry leaves and switch off the stove.

Yummy spicy and delicious biryani kathrikkai is ready to be served. Serve it with biryani, kushka or pulav.
