Sura Puttu Recipe/Shark Puttu Recipe - Tamil Nadu Special Sura Puttu

Sura Puttu/Shark Puttu is a very simple and famous dish in South India. This is one of my mom’s best recipes and I always follow the same without any modifications. It is my all time favorite. Puttu  is one easy way to get the kids to eat fish. Meanwhile do check out other interesting Mutton RecipesFish Recipes and Chicken Recipes here.

Here’s how to make it with step by step photos…

Ingredients

Paal Sura/Shark
500 gm
Turmeric powder
1 tsp
Ginger & garlic paste
1 tsp
Onions
3 big finely chopped
Green chillies
8-10 finely chopped
Garlic cloves
15 – 20 sliced
Cumin seeds
1 tsp
Curry leaves
6-10
Red chilli powder
2 tsp (adjust to taste)
Coriander powder
1 tsp
Lemon juice
1 tsp
Black pepper
10 – 15 crushed
Salt
As needed
Cilantro
2 tsp finely chopped
Oil
1 ½ tbsp
Preparation Time: 15 minutes                               Recipe Category: Side Dish
Cooking Time: 25-30 minutes                                Recipe Cuisine: Tamil Nadu, India

Method

Cut, wash and clean the sura. Now add enough water to sura in a pan, add turmeric powder, ginger& garlic paste, salt and cook for about 5 to 10 min.

After it cools down, peel the skin, remove the bones and get the meat part alone and make it to crumbles as shown in the photo.

Heat oil in a kadai, add cumin seeds and curry leaves and sauté for 20 sec. Now add the onions, green chillies, garlic cloves and sauté it changes to golden brown.

Now add the red chilli powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder and mix well. Now add the crumbled shark, salt, cilantro and mix well.  Be careful when you add salt, because you have already cooked the fish with salt. Now cook until the moisture goes away.

Finally add the crushed black pepper, lemon juice mix well and switch off the stove.

I used the black pepper powder instead of the crushed pepper.
