Ven Pongal is a simple and popular South Indian dish served as breakfast in all most all the homes especially in Tamil Nadu. Ven Pongal and Sakkarai pongal are two special pongals made on Pongal festival (Harvest festival) as neivedhyam to Sun god. Here’s how to make ven pongal with step by step photos…

Ingredients
Raw rice
1 cup
Moong Dhal/Pacchaparuppu
½ cup
Cashew nuts
6
Black pepper
2 tsp
Cumin seeds
2 tsp
Green chillies
2 slit length wise
Ginger
½ inch finely chopped
Ghee
2 tbsp
Oil
2 tsp
Curry leaves

Method
Wash both rice and dhal together. Add 4 ½ cups of water and pressure cook it for 3 whistles. [If you are using old rice use more water].


After the steam releases, add about 1 cup of water and mash the rice and dhal really well.
In a kadai heat oil and ghee together, add green chillies and ginger and sauté until the raw smell goes off. Now add cashews and fry them until golden brown. Add the black pepper, cumin seeds, curry leaves and sauté for 20 sec. Now add the cooked pongal and mix them really well. Make sure the stove is in low flame and keep it for about 2 min and switch it off.

Yummy and healthy ven pongal is ready, serve it with hot sambar or chutney. Check out the links below for sambar's.
