Kathirikai Poriyal/Brinjal Poriyal

This is a simple kathirikai poriyal found in most of the South Indian homes but made differently in each house hold. This is my mom’s version of brinjal poriyal which has the tangy taste of tomatoes infused together with all the spices which taste awesome and stunning.

Here’s how to make kathrikai poriyal with step by step photos…

Ingredients

Brinjal/Kathrikkai
500 gm
Onion
1 finely chopped
Tomato
2 finely chopped
Green chillies
2 slit length wise
Sambar powder
2 tsp
Turmeric powder
¼ tsp
Mustard seeds
½ tsp
Cumin seeds
½ tsp
Urad dal
½ tsp
Channa dal
½ tsp
Oil
2 tbsp
Curry leaves
8 – 10
Salt
As needed

Method

Heat oil in a kadai splutter the mustard seeds then add cumin seeds, urad dal, channa dal, curry leaves and sauté until the dals turn to golden brown color.

Add the onions, green chillies and sauté until it turns to golden brown color. Now add the tomatoes and fry until they are mushy.

Add the brinjals to the kadai and mix really well. Let it cook in oil for about 5 minutes.

The color of the brinjals will slightly change at that time add  turmeric powder, sambar powder, salt and mix everything well.

Cook the brinjals in low flame, sprinkle little water. cover and cook the brinjals for about 10-12 minutes. Stir in between to avoid the brinjals from burning.

A perfect and delicious “Brinjal Poriyal” is ready to be served with any type of rice variety, or just roll in a roti and have it for lunch or dinner.

  2. Yum, yum. Love the flavors, another fav among us. Brinjals are like the first choice for most of the dishes cooked at home and curries are not complete with brinjals too.
