Milagai Killi Potta Sambar Recipe/Killi Potta Sambar/Killi Potta Sambar without Sambar Powder/How to make Killi Potta Sambar with step by step photos and Video

Killi potta sambar is a very simple and quick sambar that can be made within minutes. Killi potta sambar means you just add redchillies and make sambar. My mom makes this sambar very often and serves with potato roast, this combo just tastes heavenly. The best part of this sambar is, it does not need lot of ingredients but still tastes great. We do not use sambar powder for this sambar, but it gets its taste from the dry red chillies and the green chillies.  Do try out this delicious Milagai Killi Potta Sambar and post your comments here. Here's how to make Killi Potta Sambar with step by step photos…

Ingredients
1 cup [200 ml cup ]
Onion
1 big finely chopped
Green Chillies
6 slit and cut
Tomatoes
3 finely chopped
Garlic Cloves
10-12 sliced
Ginger [optional]
1 inch piece [crushed]
Asafoetida/Hing
¼ tsp +one big pinch
Tamarind/Puli
One small gooseberry size ball
Turmeric Powder
½ tsp
Corinader Leaves/Cilantro
2 tbsp finely chopped
Salt
As needed

For Tempering
Oil
1 tbsp
Mustard Seeds/Kadugu
½ tsp
Cumin Seeds/Jeeragam
½ tsp
Dry Red Chillies/Kaaindha Milagai
6-7
Curry Leaves/Karuvepillai
12-15

Method
Chop the onions, tomatoes and green chillies. Peel the garlic cloves, slice them. Peel the ginger , crush it and keep it ready.

Wash the thoor dal  add 3 cups of water, 1/4 tsp of gingelly oil, 1/2 tsp of turmeric powder, 1/4 tsp of  asafoetida/hing/perungayam  and pressure cook for 3-4 whistles. Mash the cooked dal properly, add a cup of water and keep it aside. 


Extract the tamarind juice with ¼ cup of water and keep it aside.

Add the tamarind water to the dal, mix it  and keep it aside.

Heat 1 tbsp of oil in a kadai/pan, splutter mustard seeds, then add cumin seeds, curry leaves and fry until it turns crispy.

Add dry red chillies and fry for 20-30 seconds.

Add finely chopped onions, little salt and fry for about a minute.

Add slit and cut green chillies and and fry well until the onions change to light golden color.

Add the sliced garlic, crushed ginger and saute well for about a minute.

At this stage, add finely chopped tomatoes and saute well until they turn mushy.

Now add the cooked dal tamarind mixture to the kadaai/pan.

Add 1 ½ cup of water, required salt, little asafoetida water and mix everything really well.
Let the sambar boil for about 6-7 minutes.

Add the chopped coriander leaves, mix really well and switch off the stove.

Yummy, delicious, super easy Milagai Killi Potta Sambar is ready to be enjoyed.

      Thanks for contacting, I have regular 200 ml azhakku, if you have only 250 ml cup you can use that as well.
      Water also for dal 1:3 ratio is perfect which ever cup using for dal, use the same for water.

  18. Hi...After adding dal and tamrind water...u just boiled for 7 mins..is it okay .or shud boil more to remove tamraind smell..plz reply.

    1. Yes Priyanka, 7-8 minutes is more than enough because by then the tamarind smell will go away and also this is thanni sambar will be little watery and you will get nice aroma at that time switch off the stove. pls watch the video for clear idea...
