Paruppu Thakkali/Thakkali Paruppu/Tomato Dal

Paruppu Thakkali is a very healthy and yummy dal that can be prepared very fast and served with white rice & ghee or idlis, chapathis and rotis. In this dal we do not use tamarind instead the tomatoes give the sour taste and balance the taste of dal.

Here’s how to make Paruppu Thakkali with step by step photos...

Ingredients
Thoor dal/Thuvaram paruppu
1 cup
Tomatoes
3 (big)chopped
Green chillies
2 slit
Chilli powder
1 tsp
Turmeric Powder
½ tsp
Asafoetida
¼ tsp
Salt
As needed

For Seasoning
Mustard seeds
½ tsp
Cumin seeds
½ tsp
Urad dal
½ tsp
Dry red chillies
2
Curry leaves
10
Oil
1 tsp

Method
Add washed dal, tomatoes, green chillies, red chilli powder, turmeric powder with about 2 ½ cups of water for about 3 whistles.

After the steam releases mash the dal well with matthu or potato masher.

Heat oil in a pan, splutter mustard seeds, next add cumin seeds, urad dal, red chillies, curry leaves and asafoetida. Now sauté it for about 5 to 10 sec then add it to the dal.

Add enough salt and let the dal simmer for about 3 min and then switch off the stove.

Hot and yummy paruppu thakkali is ready, serve it hot with white rice and ghee or roti.
