Cabbage /Muttai Gose kootu [with channa dal/kadalai paruppu]

We all make different kinds of kootu, this is one among them. This cabbage kootu is my husband’s favourite, usually tomatoes are not added but I prefer adding them. This is a very special South Indian kootu that be made very quickly and taste delectable. Check out other delicious kootu varieties here.

Here’s how to make cabagge kootu with step by step photos…

Ingredients
Cabbage
2 to 2 ½  finely chopped
Channa dal/Kadalai paruppu
1 cup
Onion
1 chopped
Green chillies
2 slit length wise
Tomatoes
1 chopped
Turmeric powder
½ tsp
Asafoetida
¼ tsp
Salt
As needed

For Grinding
Grated coconut
2 tbsp
Cumin seeds
½ tsp
Green chillies
1

For Tempering
Mustard seeds
1 tsp
Cumin seeds
1 tsp
Urad dal
1 tsp
Curry leaves
10
Oil
1 tsp
Serves: 4 to 5
Cooking time: 20 min
Method
Wash and soak the channa dal/kadalai paruppu for about 30-40 min. Grind the ingredients mentioned in the table to a fine paste and keep it aside.

Add the washed channa dal, chopped cabbage, onions, green chillies, tomatoes, turmeric powder, salt and 2 – 2 ½ cups of water. Cook for three whistles and switch off the stove.

After the steam releases, open the lid and add the ground coconut paste, asafoetida and let it boil for 3 – 4 min. Now switch off the stove.

Now heat oil in kadai and temper the ingredients mentioned and add it to the cabbage and stir it well.

Yummy, delicious and comforting cabbage kootu/Muttai gose kottu is ready to be enjoyed.

Suggestions
Adding coconut paste is optional, if you are in a time crunch and not bale to grind coconut you can very well skip it. The kootu will still taste great.
