Simple Semiya/Vermicelli Upma/Semiya Upma Recipe/Vermicelli Upma Recipe with step by step photos

This is a very simple and quick semiya upma which takes about 15 – 20 min to cook. I have added tomatoes because I like the tangy taste of it and my kids also like it this way. You can very well replace tomatoes with lemon juice. This is a very simple version of semiya upma without vegetables, I make it when I am lazy to cut vegetables and when I am in a time crunch. I will post semiya upma with vegetables in my future post. Meanwhile do check out other interesting and healthy Breakfast Recipes here.

Here’s how to make Semiya Upma with step by step photos…

Ingredients
Semiya/Vermicilli
2 cups
Onion
1 finely chopped
Green chillies
3 -4 slit length wise
Tomato
2 finely chopped
Ginger
One small piece finely chopped
Coriander leaves
2 tsp finely chopped
Salt
As needed

For Tempering
Oil
1 tbsp
Mustard seeds
1 tsp
Cumin seeds
1 tsp
Urad dal
1 tsp
Bengal gram dal/Channa dal
1 tsp
Curry leaves
8-10
Preparation Time: 10 minutes                            Recipe Category: Breakfast
Cooking Time: 20 minutes                                   Recipe Cuisine: South Indian

Method
Dry roast the vermicelli until it turns golden brown. Roasting the vermicelli prevents it from sticking with each other. Transfer it to a plate and keep it aside.

Heat oil in a kadai, splutter mustards seeds after that add the cumin seeds, urad dal, channa dal and sauté until the dal turns golden brown.

Now add onions, green chillies, ginger, curry leaves and sauté until translucent.

Add the tomatoes and sauté for 1 or 2 min.

Now add 2 cups of water, salt and let it boil. When it starts boiling, add the roasted vermicelli slowly and stir continuously.

Cook the vermicelli for about 5 min and wait until all the water evaporates, carefully toss it around. Finally add the coriander leaves mix it well and switch off the stove.

Delicious Semiya Upma is ready, just serve it hot.

Note:

If you are using roasted vermicelli, you need not roast them.

I have not added vegetables to this semiya upma, you can very well add them.

You can add cashewnuts when tempering to enhance the taste.
