Rice Flour Puttu With Idli Cooker/Arisi Maavu Puttu/Rice Flour Puttu Recipe/How to make Rice Flour Puttu with step by step photos

Rice flour puttu is a very traditional puttu made in Southern India, especially in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Rice flour for puttu is usually prepared in the house. But now I used the branded rice flour from the shop. Puttu is a very healthy and filling breakfast or as evening snack for kids. I have earlier posted Ragi puttu and Rava/Sooji puttu, check it out for step wise instructions with photos. Similar to Ragi puttu  and Rava/Sooji puttu I have made earlier I have used the Idli cooker to make this Rice puttu, but you can use the puttu maker as well. Meanwhile do check out other interesting and healthy Breakfast Recipes here.

Here’s how to make Rice flour puttu with step by step photos…
Ingredients
2 cups
Grated Coconut
1 cup
Sugar
¾ cup or adjust to taste
1 tsp
Salt
½ tsp
Gingelly oil/Nallennai
½ tbsp
Preparation Time: 10-12 minutes                       Recipe Category: Breakfast
Cooking Time: 15 minutes                                     Recipe Cuisine: Tamil Nadu

 Method
Dry roast the rice flour on low flame, keep stirring continuously to avoid burning of flour. Roast for about 5 -7 minutes and switch off the stove. Remove the flour from the stove.
The flour will be very hot, stir the flour so it cools down faster.

Now add the flour to the wide mixing bowl, add the salt and mix well.

Sprinkle about one tbsp of water mix the rice flour with hand.

Add water little by little and mix thoroughly until you are able to form balls from the flour mixture. But the balls should break easily. Now the flour is ready to be steamed.

Now cut a clean cloth (cotton) for your Idli plate, cut a hole in the middle so that the cloth slides through the idli stand on to the plate.

[Use only clean, washed cloth and keep it only for steaming purpose. I think you will remember the days when our mothers used cloth for idli plates to make idli’s]

Now wet and squeeze the cloth and place it on the idli plate. Then spread the rice flour mixture on the idli plate as shown in the photo. Now steam it in idli cooker for 15 to 20 min.

After it is cooked, transfer the cooked rice flour mixture to the bowl.

Then add cardamom powder, grated coconut, sugar, gingelly oil and mix really good with hand. Now, yummy rice puttu is ready to be served.

Note:
If you think rice puttu is dry after cooking, just sprinkle little hot water or hot milk and mix it well.
I have used gingelly oil, you can replace it with ghee for added flavor and taste.
When steaming the rice flour mixture, see to that they are loosely packed.
Super delicious and healthy Rice flour puttu is ready to be enjoyed. Serve it with hot milk and bananas.

    1. Hi Meenakshi,
Steaming with cotton cloth is better. If not the puttu will not cook evenly and will not be moist and will stick to the plate.
Thanks a lot for stopping by and asking, I hope I answered your question. Please keep coming back for more delicious recipes...
