Ragi Semiya Upma/Ragi Vermicilli Upma/Ragi Semiya Upma Recipe/How to make Ragi Semiya with step by step photos

Hello Friends,
I am back after my vacation, we had great time back in Chennai. I hope you all had great Christmas and wonderful New Year celebrations. I was really missing you all a lot, thank you all friends, readers, subscribers and visitors for your continuous support and encouragement. I am blogging after about a month, so I thought of sharing with you all something very healthy, quick and yummy – Ragi Semiya Upma. Before going into the recipe I want to share a few things about Ragi.

Ragi/finger millet is a rich source of Calcium, Iron, Protein, Fiber and other minerals. The rich source of fiber in Ragi helps to lower cholesterol level and is very easy to digest. Ragi cools down our body temperature in hot days and helps in weight control as well. The rich natural source of calcium in Ragi helps in strengthening the bone in growing children, older people and keeps everyone healthy. Check out my other Ragi dishes like Ragi Koozh, Ragi Kanji, RagiVadai, Ragi ladoo, Ragi Dosai, Ragi Puttu, Ragi Adai in the respective links.

Here’s how to make Ragi Semiya Upma with step by step photos…

Method
Cut open the Ragi Semiya Packet and soak it in water for about a minute and not more than that because the ragi with become soggy.

Drain the water completely from ragi semiya and place it in a idli plate and steam it for about 5 minutes and switch off the stove.

Heat oil in a kadai, splutter mustard seeds, then add cumin seeds, split urad dal, chana dal, cashew nuts and fry until they turn golden brown color.

Now add dry red chillies, onions, green chillies, curry leaves, pinch of salt and saute until the onions are translucent.

Finally add the steam cooked ragi semiya, salt and mix till everything combines really well. Switch off the stove.

Serve it hot with coconut chutney or any spicy gravy like vatha kuzhambu or milagu kuzhambu.

Suggestions:
You can add some grated coconut finally to the ragi semiya upma for added taste.
You can also add roasted peanuts when tempering, the kids will love it.
Yummy, healthy, quick and delicious Ragi Semiya Upma is ready to be enjoyed.

  1. Hi Priya,
So excited to see you back and am grinning here with happiness. Happy to hear that you had a great time in Chennai. It must have a good long holiday and yes, we all need it. Happy new year to you and everyone at home. Hope you can post some pics of your trip to Chennai. I would love to see. Chillies and everything in the upma are yum.

Not sure if we have ragi semiya over here but I can try with our mee hoon, almost the same excepts its madw with rice flour. As usual, I love simple recipes and thanks so much for sharing. You know how time is so tight for me and everything is about the least time in the kitchen.
