Carrot Kosumalli/Carrot & Moong Dal Salad

Today I am going to share with you all a very simple, healthy and colourful salad/kosumalli. Kosumalli is a salad made with raw vegetables and soaked moong dal. Kosumalli is a very popular and traditional salad prepared on special festival days, weddings and meals in South India.

Here’s how to make Carrot Kosumalli with step by step photos…


Ingredients

Grated Carrot
1 cup [about 2-3 carrots]
Moong dal/Pasi paruppu
½ cup
Lemon juice
2 tsp [adjust to taste]
Salt
As needed
Cilantro/Coriander leaves
2 tbsp finely chopped

For Tempering

Mustard seeds
½ tsp
Cumin seeds
½ tsp
Urad dal
½ tsp
Green chillies
2 [finely chopped]
Curry leaves
6-8
Oil
½ tsp
Preparation time: 10 -12 minutes           
Cooking time: 2-3 minutes
Serves: 3-4

Method

Wash and soak the moog dal for about 1 hour.

Wash, peel and grate the carrots.


Heat oil in a pan, splutter mustard seeds. Now add the cumin seeds and urad dal when it starts to change colour add the green chillies, curry leaves and fry for about 20 secs. Switch off the stove.

Drain all the water from moong dal, wash it with clean water one more time. Drain the water completely.

Now add the moong dal, lemon juice, salt and mix it with the carrots.

Add the tempering to the carrot and mix everything really well.  Add the finely chopped cilantro and stir it well.


Suggestions:
  • You can add ½ cup of chopped cucumber to this salad.
  • Finally you can add grated coconut for garnishing as well.

  6. I love your blog, the beautiful big pics, the recipe in particular which is a regular in my place as this is one of the earliest salads we were taught to have by my mother, who liked to give tadka to everything, such a lovely presentation.
