Paruppu Keerai Chapathi/Chapathi with Dal & Greens/Keerai Chapathi Recipe/Paruppu Keerai Chapathi with step by step photos

Today I am going to share a very interesting chapathi made with dal and greens. The choice of greens is totally your’s, I have used araikeerai to make this chapathi. I always come across one problem when packing lunch, my husband and elder daughter prefer to have rice for lunch and my little one always will prefer to have chapathis or rotis etc. Whenever I make paruppu keerai masiyal or any other green varieties my little daughter never has it during lunch, and I used to feel very bad about it. But then whenever I make paruppu keerai during weekdays for lunch, I blend the prepared keerai and make chapathis for her. But for my husband and elder daughter I make rice, mix this dal and prepare some vegetables and pack the lunch. I think lot of moms must be coming across this kind of problem when packing lunch for your whole family, but when you go by my idea you will feel happy and satisfied. One best part of it is your kid will eat all the chapathis and she/he will get the greens also. Meanwhile friends, do not forget to check out other interesting and delicious breakfast varieties here.

*** You can choose any variety of greens like Paruppu keerai , Fenugreek/Vendhaya keerai, Pasalai/Spinach , Manathakkali Keerai etc according to the availability in the place you reside.
Wash the dal and soak it for about 30 min for fast cooking. Add about 2 cups of water, turmeric powder, asafoetida and cook in pressure cooker for 3 -4 whistles. After the presuure releases, mash the dal and keep it aside.

Clean, wash and chop the aria keerai or any greens of your choie and keep it aside.

Heat 2 tsp of oil in a kadai, add onions, green chillies and saute until the onions turn golden brown colour.

Add the tomatoes and saute until they turn mushy. Now add the chooped keerai/greens and saute for about 2 minutes.

Now add the cooked dal, salt, red chilli powder, turmeric powder and let it come to boil. Simmer, cover and cook for another 5-7 minutes. Add the tamarind water and let it boil for another 2 minutes. Now switch off the stove.

Paruppu keerai is ready, now let it cool.

Add about 4-5 laddles of this paruppu keerai to the blender and blend it to puree.

Take the wheat flour in a bowl, add needed salt to it.

Now add the Dal and Keerai puree to the wheat flour and start making dough. Be careful when adding Dal and Keerai puree to the flour, add it little by little to make the dough.  Do not pour the puree all at one time.

Add 2 tbsp of oil to the dough and make a smooth pliable dough.

Cover and keep it for 5 minutes. Make small equal sized balls with the dough.

Dust the balls with wheat flour and roll them to round shapes.

Heat tawa, cook the chapathis on medium flame on one side for few seconds flip them and cook the other side as well. Spread some oil along the sides of the chapathi and cook them evenly on both the sides.

Delicious, healthy and flavourful chapthi is ready to be enjoyed.

This chapathis is good all by itself without any side dish, but can be served hot with yogurt or any sabji of your choice.

NOTE:
You will surely have some left over dal, just temper it with mustard seeds, cumin seeds and serve it with bowl of rice and pappad.
