Today, I am going to share a very healthy tea
which my mom used to make for me in my school days – Sombu Tea. Sombu/Perunjeeragam/Fennel
Seeds are spicy seeds with strong taste excellent aroma and taste and is widely
used all over India in cooking. Fennel Seeds/Sombu increases the taste and
aroma of the cooked food to a great extent. Not only the taste and aroma, but they

Benefits of Sombu/Fennel Seeds/Perunjeeragam
1. Helps Regulate Blood Pressure
Chewing fennel seeds increases the nitrite content
in saliva, making it a great natural way to keep the blood pressure levels on
control. Fennel seeds are rich source of
potassium which helps to control your heart rate and blood pressure.
2. Reduces Water Retention
Drinking fennel tea, regularly helps flush out
excess fluids as it works as a diuretic. They help in removing toxins and
reduce the risk of urinary tract problems.
They also help in stimulating perspiration
3. Fennel Tea for Constipation, Indigestion, IBS
& Bloating [IBS –Irritable Bowel Syndrome]
Fennel tea helps in indigestion, bloating and

Fennel seeds reduce all 3 doshas [Vata, Pitha,
Kapha]. The seeds have a cooling effect on the body. Consuming fennel tea

Ayurveda to calm the nerves and promote mental clarity.

Ingredients
To Roast & Grind
Fennel
Seeds/Sombu

¼ cup
|
To Make Tea
Water
|
1 cup
[240 ml]
|
Fennel
Seeds Powder
|
1 ½ tsp
|
Panang
Kalkandu
|
1 tsp
|
Preparation Time: 5 minutes
Cooking Time: 5-10 minutes

Method
Heat a heavy bottomed pan and dry the fennel
seeds.
Fennel seed will change to golden color with a
wonderful aroma. Now switch off the stove.
Heat one cup of water in the stove, add 2 tsp of
roasted fennel seeds and let it boil really well for about 5 minutes and switch
off the stove.
Filter it to a tall glass, add panang
kalkandu/naattu sarkkarai and enjoy.
Alternate Method
Add the roasted fennel seeds to mixer and grind
it well. Store it in airtight container and use it whenever needed.
Heat 1 [220 ml] of water in a bowl, when it comes to
boil add 1 tsp [heaped] of fennel seeds powder.
Let it boil really well for couple of minutes,
now switch off the stove.
Filter it to a tall glass.
Add panang kalkandu/brown sugar/Nattu Sarkkarai
to it.
Enjoy this flavourful and healthy cup of tea.
