Method
Before
cleaning the vazhaipoo/banana flower apply little oil in your hand in order to
avoid turning your hand black and sticky.
Peel
the petals of banana flower/vazhaipoo and remove the blossoms out and repeat it
until the inner part is seen. Once all the petals are removed, you will see the
kuruthu. This kuruthu is edible and should be included in the poriyal.
Mix the
yogurt/curd in 2 cups of water and keep it aside.
Clean
and cut the vazhaipoo/banana flower into small pieces and soak in buttermilk
until use. Soaking in buttermilk is to avoid the vazhaipoo from discoloration.
Heat
oil/gingelly oil in a kadai, splutter mustard seeds, cumin seeds, urad dal,,
dry red chillies, curry leaves and sauté for 20 seconds.
Add
chopped onions, green chillies and saute until they turn translucent.
Now
squeeze the chopped vazhaipoo from butter milk and add it to the tempering. Saute the vazhaipoo for about 2 minutes.
Add red
chilli powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder, salt and stir really well.
Sprinkle
little water, cover and cook for about 12-15 minutes. Stir in between to avoid
it from burning. [Use the same water in which it was soaked for added taste]
Once
the vazhaipoo/banana flower is cooked, add grated coconut and stir really well.
Now switch off the stove.
Yes,
delicious and healthy vahaipoo/banana flower poriyal is ready to be enjoyed.
