Gourd is
called as ‘Sorakkai’ in Tamil, ‘Lauki’ in Hindi, ‘Sorakaya’ in Telugu. Bottle
Gourd belongs to a gourd family, in which the fruit is harvested young and used
as a vegetable. Bottle Gourd is rich in fiber, essential minerals, iron and
protein. They are low in calories and helps in weight loss. It prevents excess
sodium loss and also helps in preventing fatigue. Consuming bottle gourd juice
helps in treating stomach acidity, indigestion and ulcers. I have shared a few

how to make Bottle Gourd/Sorakkai Poriyal with step by step photos…
Ingredients
Bottle Gourd/Sorakkai

1 medium size

Onion
|
1 finely chopped

Green Chilli

1 finely chopped

Sambar Powder
|
1 tsp
|
Turmeric Powder
|
¼ tsp
|
Grated Coconut
|
2-3 tbsp [optional]

1 tbsp

Mustard Seeds/Kadugu
|
½ tsp

Cumin Seeds/Jeeragam

½ tsp

Urad Dal/Ullutham Paruppu

1 tsp

Channa Dal/Kadalai Paruppu

1 tsp

Curry Leaves/Karuvepilai

Method
Wash
and peel the skin of bottle gourd/sorakkai and chop them to small pieces. Chop
the onions, green chillies and set it aside.
Heat oil
in a kadai, splutter mustard seeds, add cumin seeds, urad dal and channa dal.
When channa dal turns to light golden color add curry leaves and let it turn
crispy.
Now add
the finely chopped onions, green chillies and saute well until the onions turn
translucent.
At this
stage add bottle gourd/sorakkai, salt and saute for about a minute.Now add
sambar powder, turmeric powder and stir really well.
Add
about ¼ cup of water, cover the pan and cook on medium flame till the bottle
gourd is cooked and tender. Stir for every 2-3 minutes.
Finally
when all the water is absorbed, add 2 tbsp of grated coconut and stir in for
few more minutes.
Yes,
delicious and healthy Bottle Gourd Fry/Sorakkai Poriyal is ready to be enjoyed.
Serve it hot with either roti or with steam cooked white rice, sambar, or any
variety rice.
