Method

Manathakkali Keerai

Pluck the leaves , fruits and flowers of the Manathakkali keerai and discard the stem.

Wash the Manathakkali Keerai thoroughly with water 2-3 times and drain the water. Make sure there is no mud in the keerai.

Wash ½ cup of Moong Dal/Paasi paruppu thoroughly with water 2-3 times and drain the water.

Add the washed Paasi Paruppu/Moong Dal to the pressure cooker. Add chopped onions, garlic cloves, green chillies, tomatoes, asafoetida, turmeric powder and salt to the moong dal.

Add 2 cups of water to the pressure cooker and cook for 2-3 whistles.

Wait for the steam to release all by itself and then open the lid.

Now the dal is well cooked. Mash it with a ladle.

Switch on the stove and add the washed Manathakkali Keerai to the dal. Mix everything really well.

The leaves will start to shrink and let it cook along with the dal for about 5-7 minutes or until done. Adjust the amount of salt and add little water if needed when cooking the Keerai.

When the Manathakkali keerai is cooked, switch off the stove.

Heat 2 tsp of oil in small kadai/pan, add thallippu vengaya vadagam and wait for it to splutter, then add dry red chillies and fry for 10-15 seconds. Now switch off the stove. If you do not have thallippu vadagam you can replace it by spluttering ½ tsp of mustard seeds and ½ tsp of cumin seeds.

Now add the tempering to the Cooked Manathakkali Keerai.

Delicious, healthy and heavenly tasting Manathakkli Keerai Kootu is ready to be enjoyed.
