Thakkali Kai Kootu/Pachha Thakkali Kootu/Green Tomato Kootu - தக்காளி காய் கூட்டு

Thakkali Kai Kootu is a South Indian delicacy made with raw/green tomatoes/thakkali kai along with dal and fresh ground coconut paste. It is a very simple,  healthy, spicy and tangy kootu that can be prepared as side dish and served with white rice or rotis. The green tomatoes are not available all the time in the market, but whenever I find these beautiful, tangy green tomatoes/tomatillos, I make it a point to buy them and make either kootu or thogaiyal. Agathi Keerai has numerous health benefits loaded with vitamin A, E, C and other minerals like calcium, phosphorous, Iron etc. It contains 8.4% of protein, 1.4% of fat, 3.1% of minerals. Agathi Keerai helps in easy digestion, cures acidity related problems, regulates urination, cures stomach ulcer and reduces the stress to a great extent. Thiruvathirai Kootu is a special kootu made with country vegetables [Nattu Kaikarigal] during thiruvathirai festival and offered to Lord Shiva along with Thiruvathirai Kali and steam cooked white rice. This kootu is also prepared on Pongal and offered to Sun god along with Sakkarai Pongal, Ven Pongal and Paal Pongal. This kootu is made with a minimum of 7 different types of vegetables and increase the number up to 21, but always odd number of vegetables only must be used. Try to add as many as country vegetables which available abundantly during this season. Ponnanganni Keerai is called as “Dwarf Copperleaf” in English is a green variety available throughout the year. The name “Ponnanganni” means glow like gold. It is loaded with iron, calcium and other vital nutrients that make our hair and skin glow. 

When Ponnanganni is taken for a period of 48 days regularly, it heals our body of all kinds of deficiency and reduces the body heat, as it is an excellent body coolant. Ponnanganni is specifically recommended for eye ailments, asthma, gonorrhoea, syphilis. Most of them avoid these types of greens, because they do not know how to cook them or to use them. A very simple Ponnanganni keerai poriyal/stirfry included twice or thrice a week in our diet is a wonderful remedy to stay healthy. 

Ponnanganni oil/thailam is very famous in Tamil Nadu and is used for treating headaches and also for treating excessive body heat during the summer months. Carrot & Tomato Kootu [No grinding]

This carrot & tomato kootu is the easiest kootu to make especially in the morning rush when you need to pack lunch. The best part of it is you don’t need to grind anything, yes I can  see lot of smiles in all of your face. I make this kootu when I am totally tired and when I don’t want to cook, but still have to cook. It is so easy, just add everything to the cooker, pressure cook it and then finally temper it. Beetroot Kootu with Chana Dal/Kadalai Paruppu

Beetroot kootu is a very nutritious and healthy dish that can be served with either white rice or with rotis or any Indian bread. Kootu is a very traditional food served in Tamil Nadu as a part of lunch menu and no feast (virundhu) is complete without kootu. Kootu is nothing but cooking vegetables and dals together and finally tempering them. Kootu can be done with different combination of vegetables and dals. Chow Chow Kootu/Chayote Kootu

Chow Chows/Chayotes are a light green, pear shaped fruit with one large pit, edible skin and flesh. Chayotes are native to Meixco but cultivated in warm climates all over the world. The Chayotes are technically fruits, but very often used as a vegetable. In South India Chow chow/Chayote kootu is very common and a popular dish. Kootu is nothing but a dish prepared by adding vegetables and dals together with very mild spices and seasoned for flavouring. Chow chow is very commonly called a “Bangalore Kathrikkai” in TamilNadu. Chow chow/Chayotes have high fiber and water content and very less sugar. Pudalangai Kootu/Snake Gourd Kootu

Kootu is a simple and healthy dish. Kootu means vegetables added with lentils and is a side dish in a tamil feast. It can be mixed in rice and given to kids so they get the proteins from dhals and the vegetables at the same time. It is generally made either with Thoor dhal or Moong dhal or Bengal gram dhal.
