Ragi Sweet Semiya/Vermicelli is one of the easiest breakfast/evening snacks that can be made in a jiffy. Ragi Semiya can be prepared both in savory/spicy or sweet version; I have already shared the Ragi Semiya Upma[spicyversion] earlier. In this sweet version, I have used cane sugar[nattu sakkarai], you can very well replace it with regular sugar as well. Ragi Semiya is loaded with calcium, vitamins and minerals, addition of grated coconut and cane sugar makes it one super healthy breakfast and keeps your day going. I have been thinking about sharing with you all, millet recipes from my kitchen, but I was not blogging for quite sometime due to various reasons. But today I have something very special for all of you, it's nothing but Varagu arisi upma. Varagu arisi is gluten-free and is excellent source of vitamins and minerals. It is rich in fiber and digestive friendly. Studies have shown varagu arisi helps in controlling blood sugar and cholesterol. It is packed with nutrients and is great energy source for all the age groups. I have made a very simple varagu arisi upma but you can add a twist to it by adding a bowl of vegetable to make vegetable varagu arisi upma. I will post that recipe also very soon. I am back after my vacation, we had great time back in Chennai. I hope you all had great Christmas and wonderful New Year celebrations. I was really missing you all a lot, thank you all friends, readers, subscribers and visitors for your continuous support and encouragement. I am blogging after about a month, so I thought of sharing with you all something very healthy, quick and yummy – Ragi Semiya Upma. Before going into the recipe I want to share a few things about Ragi.

Ragi/finger millet is a rich source of Calcium, Iron, Protein, Fiber and other minerals. The rich source of fiber in Ragi helps to lower cholesterol level and is very easy to digest. Ragi cools down our body temperature in hot days and helps in weight control as well. Simple Semiya/Vermicelli Upma/Semiya Upma Recipe/Vermicelli Upma Recipe with step by step photos

This is a very simple and quick semiya upma which takes about 15 – 20 min to cook. I have added tomatoes because I like the tangy taste of it and my kids also like it this way. You can very well replace tomatoes with lemon juice. This is a very simple version of semiya upma without vegetables, I make it when I am lazy to cut vegetables and when I am in a time crunch. Most of the days, I just don’t plan much about what is to be cooked for breakfast or to pack for lunch. It is always in the last minute I decide to make something and get things done with. Today was one among them, I was really tired, so woke up late, had to pack lunch and send the kids to school. I ended up making Aval/Poha upma in a jiffy and everything was done on time. To my surprise I could get some clicks, I could read my husband’s thoughts “what on earth is she doing…”. But it’s ok, jobs done, wait not just done but well done. Oats Upma

Oats upma is yet another way to consume oats in a tasty and healthy manner. So why not try it to find out how yummy it is...

Ingredients

Oats                                                  1 cup
Mixed vegetables                        1 cup (finely chopped)
(beans,carrot,peas)
Onion(small)                                1 no   (finely chopped)
Tomato                                           1 no   (finely chopped)
Chillies                                             2 or 3 nos (slit in to pieces)
Ginger                                             small piece (finely chopped)

Mustard                                          1/4 tsp
Cumin Seeds                                  1/4 tsp  
Channa dhal                                  1/2 tsp
Curry leaves
Oil for tempering 
Salt as required
Water

Method
  • Heat one tsp of oil in a pan. Add mustard, cumin and channa dhal. Wait for it to splutter.
  • Add onions, saute until golden brown. Then add the chillies, ginger,curry leaves and tomatoes and saute until soft (2 to 3 min).
  • Add the vegetables and saute for another 3 to 5 mins, later add 3 cups and bring it to boil.
  • Add salt and oats and mix thoroughly.
  • Cover with a lid and cook till the oats are cooked.
